Brightstar Ohlson is the CEO and Principal of Bright Research Group, a cutting edge consultancy practice. Through developmental evaluation, consumer research, and technical assistance, Bright Research Group’s mission is to help our clients understand their consumers so that they may achieve greater impact. Brightstar brings close to 15 years of experience in academic and community settings and content expertise in community health, youth development, violence prevention and education. Brightstar has worked with numerous public and private agencies focused on improving the health and well-being of low-income communities of color, by helping them to articulate their theory of change, measure their impact, use insight to drive programming and access the voice and expertise of consumers.
Since founding the firm in 2010, funders and community-based organizations have benefited from Brightstar’s strategic insight, coaching and advice. She has assisted funders in shifting into a capacity-building role with their grantees, most recently The San Francisco Foundation’s Oakland Codes and Oakland Unite’s Violence Prevention Program. A broad range of community health agencies and funders have engaged Brightstar to design and evaluate programs that partner with impacted communities to achieve population health goals. Brightstar led the design of Covered California’s outreach, education and enrollment assistance programs, including a $40 million grant program and has partnered with public health agencies throughout the Bay Area.
Brightstar brings her professional training and personal experience as a bicultural and bilingual (Spanish) researcher to inform the design of research and evaluation projects. She sits on the Board of Directors for the African American Wellness Project. Brightstar holds a Master’s degree in Education from the University of New Haven and a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from Yale University. Brightstar resides in Oakland, CA and is a mother of three.
